Shanghai builds itself into global medical tourism destination

Chinese mega city Shanghai is building its reputation as an international hub for medical care by encouraging hospitals to meet international standards and practices.

Medical experts and doctors in the city recently drafted the country's first set of requirements for medical institutions to be considered in-line with international standards.

A German patient at one such center recently underwent liver surgery and said he was very satisfied with the experience.

"I have a very good experience. The doctors are very good specialists. I totally trust what they tell me and I'm very satisfied with the surgery they have done so far."

To further cater to expat patients, many of the city's international hospitals employ multilingual doctors, and have established relationships with leading global health insurance companies.

A report from Allied Market Research says that the global market for medical tourism is projected to reach over 273 billion U.S. dollars by the year 2027.
