Over the years, he has witnessed the fast development of the city and fallen in love with it.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): ARMAND ROSSOUW, South African expat in China
"Since I moved to Xiamen, I've been in love with this place. I'm proud to see what we've achieved (in Xiamen), what we've done over the past 6 years, and how much we've grown. And looking around us at the infrastructures and the construction that is happening, how quickly it is expanding and building and lifting people out of poverty makes me feel really proud to be able to be part of this community and help, and (I'm) really optimistic for the future."
Rossouw now works at Achieve Xiamen International School. As the 16th BRICS Summit took place in the Russian city of Kazan this week, he expressed expectations for more cultural and educational exchanges among BRICS countries.
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): ARMAND ROSSOUW, South African expat in China
"My expectations would be technological innovation within schools, cultural diversity, and education within schools. So looking at Xiamen, it could help South African schools quite a lot in terms of using technology in the classroom. And looking at the cultural side of it, creating an exchange program between the BRICS countries allows students the opportunity to go and experience a different culture and be educated about that culture.
One of the things that I was also thinking about is, for example, having an exchange program between the cultures, between the students and adults alike, introducing the Chinese culture to South Africa, South African culture to the Chinese here in Xiamen."
Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Xiamen, China.
