STORYLINE:

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): MATTHEW ERICKSEN, American expat living in China
"Hi, everybody. My name is Matt. I'm from the United States. And today I'm in front of the Traditional Chinese Medicine (Hospital) in Gongcheng City (County). It's a specific Chinese medicine of the Yao people. And the Yao people, which is one of the many minority groups in China, is very good at Chinese medicine. And I've heard a lot of great things. So today I'm gonna go take a look and try out some different treatments. Let's go take a look."

SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): MATTHEW ERICKSEN, American expat living in China
"Now I'm inside the hospital. First, I will meet Dr. Li for a basic body check. She will take my pulse, and I also need to tell her about my physical condition. Let's go. Hello, Dr. Li."

SOUNDBITE 3 (Chinese): LI MENGYUE, Doctor at Gongcheng Yao Autonomous County Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital
"Hello, what can I do for you?"

SOUNDBITE 4 (Chinese): MATTHEW ERICKSEN, American expat living in China
"I just want to get a general idea of the condition of my body first. Actually, I have a few major issues, my knee and foot have been fractured for several years, and I've also gained quite a bit of weight over the past few years. I just want to understand if there are any problems with my body or if there's anything I should be more aware of."

SOUNDBITE 5 (Chinese): MATTHEW ERICKSEN, American expat living in China
"I've arrived in the cupping room, and Dr. Li is getting ready to perform cupping on me. I've had cupping done a few times- some in China and some in the U.S. I haven't done it in recent years, but I've noticed that many athletes, including NBA players, have small round purple marks on their backs. I realized that this treatment has become quite popular in the West. So now I'd like to try it again."

SOUNDBITE 6 (Chinese): MATTHEW ERICKSEN, American expat living in China
"I just finished the cupping session, and I can clearly feel the effects pretty quickly. I think it's quite good."

SOUNDBITE 7 (English): MATTHEW ERICKSEN, American expat living in China
"The doctors here have taken care of me with so much care. I've been here for the last few hours going through a few different tests. I had done cupping in the future or in the past. And today was a lot more thorough. My back, my whole waist feels much, I guess a lot of relief was given. After that, we went on and we made these great handcraft medicine bags that have traditional herbs in it. That's very good for an ailment that the doctor noticed that I had for (what's) called sinus infection. After that we moved on and I talked to the doctor a little bit more about chronic back pain I have from my lifestyle from being an office worker. And I've had a few different surgeries in the past on my leg and knees. And we finished up the day with some acupuncture. And to be honest, my back feels great, my legs and ankle which already always have kind of chronic pain and kind of hard to move. All that feels great. So I'm very, very pleased with kind of the experience today. And I would love to come back in the future or to find any other traditional Chinese medicine wherever I'm at in the world. Thanks, this was awesome."
