SOUNDBITE (English): AKTER MAHMUD, Professor in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at Jahangirnagar University of Bangladesh
"I have visited a few cities in China, for example, Beijing, Chongqing, Kunming. I have seen the Chinese government have taken a robust model for urban development. They have developed a lot of infrastructure and housing and they also emphasized economic development. But the Chinese cities, they have a lot of other features also. For example, eco-cities and sponge cities, they are well appreciated in other parts of the world.
Eco-cities, they have adopted green building technologies and energy efficiency in these cities, which is very well appreciated. On the other hand, the sponge cities, they are a good example of how to reduce urban flooding in the city. In tropical cities like Bangladesh and the cities of the subcontinent, they can also think about the sponge city model, because it is very functional in reducing urban flooding."
Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Dhaka.
