Nagqu, situated at an average altitude of over 4,500 meters, has the highest average elevation of any Chinese city.
Liu Hao, an obstetrician and gynecologist from Liaoning Province, is a member of the 7th medical assistance team sent by Liaoning to Xizang. He's now working at the People's Hospital of Nagqu City.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): LIU HAO, Obstetrician and gynecologist
"I knew it was a great opportunity to come to Nagqu. I hope to contribute to improving the local healthcare standards and provide some assistance. I also want to do something for the pregnant women in Nagqu, so I signed up for the Xizang medical aid program."
Nagqu is a sparsely populated city that grapples with low oxygen levels. After arriving in Nagqu, Liu gained a deeper understanding of the harsh climate here.
SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): LIU HAO, Obstetrician and gynecologist
"After arriving, I found that the conditions were even more challenging than I had imagined. I realized that my body would need some time to adapt."
SOUNDBITE 3 (Chinese): LIU HAO, Obstetrician and gynecologist
"Perhaps due to geographical factors, many pregnant women have not sought prenatal care regularly. In the Nagqu region, there are many cases of severe conditions such as gestational hypertension and eclampsia. with incidence rates much higher compared to places like Shenyang.
We've encountered a case where a pregnant woman had been convulsing at home for nearly six or seven hours before being brought to our hospital. Fortunately, with our prompt and active intervention, we were able to successfully deliver the baby."
After the intense rescue, Liu hopes that he could provide greater support for local pregnant women.
SOUNDBITE 4 (Chinese): LIU HAO, Obstetrician and gynecologist
"I also hope to lead the local doctors in improving prenatal care, making it more effective. Through mentoring and training, I aim to enhance the clinical skills and basic knowledge of local doctors, ensuring that the diagnosis and treatment of diseases become more standardized."
The People's Hospital of Nagqu City has been receiving support from medical professionals and experts from Liaoning since 2015.
It was also in 2015 that China launched a national program that sends medical personnel from relatively developed eastern regions to Xizang to improve medical service levels.
SOUNDBITE 5 (Chinese): JIA ZHUQIANG, Head of medical assistance team sent by Liaoning to Xizang and director of People's Hospital in Nagqu City
"We aim to apply the principles and practices of mentoring throughout our aid work in Xizang. We will use various methods to ensure that the advanced techniques of Liaoning experts remain in Nagqu, transferring knowledge to local medical professionals and training local healthcare staff. This will achieve true team-based aid, transitioning from merely providing support to fostering self-sufficiency."
