Edmonds, United States - November 04, 2024 An 82-year-old woman from Edmonds has been taken into custody for a racially motivated hate crime after she assaulted two women rallying in support of a conservative political figure. The incident unfolded on Monday afternoon near the intersection of 100th Avenue West and Edmonds Way, where the suspect approached the victims, commenting on their race and political beliefs before the physical confrontation. The attack occurred when the suspect, who remains unnamed, confronted one of the victims about her support for Trump, specifically referencing her skin color as a point of contention. The 55-year-old victim from Edmonds was struck in the chin after the suspect pushed her, leading to intervention by a second 66-year-old woman who was also assaulted. Edmonds Police Chief Michelle Bennett emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, "The Constitution protects peaceful rallies in our community, and community members should never be met with violence while exercising those rights." Mayor Mike Rosen expressed his dismay, highlighting the importance of free expression in democracy: "Community members peacefully showing political support should not be subject to hateful violence." The suspect was booked into Snohomish County Jail, with officers establishing probable cause for a hate crime under RCW 9A.36.080.
