SOUNDBITE 1 (English): ANDREW ROBB, Former Australian Minister for Trade and Investment
"APEC has got a very big role to play, I think, in trying to ensure that this protectionist development does not get worse and worse. History has shown for time and time again, you open the economy up, it's better for everybody. So I think that issue is a difficult one. And that's got to be tackled at APEC.
That's a very powerful forum. It has been in the last 30 years. It's been a wonderful forum. And I think there're always issues. There're a couple of big issues at the moment.
We should get on and make sure we do what's in our own interests. And that is to keep things open as best we can."

Robb also highlighted the great contributions of China's opening up to the other economies over the past decades.

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): ANDREW ROBB, Former Australian Minister for Trade and Investment
"China has, its economy is heading towards a level of success similar to other parts, to much of the Western world. All those economies have benefited from opening up massively, massively."
