CCTV shows a cargo plane crashing and exploding in a fireball as it tried to land at an airport in Lithuania in the early hours of Monday morning.

The Boeing 737 operated for DHL by Spanish cargo carrier Swiftair, was approaching the Vilnius airport when it smashed into land near home.

Officials said at least one person from the crew had died and three others were injured. Firemen evacuated 12 residents from homes near the crash site, police said.

Flight data shows the aircraft departed from DHL's hub at Leipzig Airport in Germany just after 3 am local time and crashed around 90 minutes later.

Aviation investigators are now looking into the cause of the crash.

Fire chief Renatas Pozela said none of the residents in homes near the explosion were injured. One property suffered minor structural damage.
