Bakersfield, United States - November 25, 2024 11/25/2024 10:45 am (GMT-0800) BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – At approximately 10:45 a.m., dispatch received reports of a fire on the roof of a restaurant near the intersection of Roberts Lane and N. Chester Avenue in the Oildale community. Units en route confirmed light smoke visible from a distance. As crews approached, a second alarm was called when the smoke began to intensify and darken, according to the Kern County FD incident report. "Upon arrival, fire units found a commercial restaurant with flames visible from the kitchen ventilation system and thick, black smoke pouring out of the dining room and kitchen doors. Engine 63 made the initial entry, prioritizing victim search while simultaneously deploying hose lines in an attempt to quickly contain the blaze. However, the smoke conditions inside created a zero-visibility environment, hindering progress on fire suppression," stated the report. KCFD Truck 65 and BFD Truck 1 were assigned to perform vertical ventilation to help release the superheated gases. This improved conditions inside and enabled interior crews to locate and suppress the fire. Once ventilation was established, visibility improved, revealing that the fire had fully engulfed the attic space, according to the KCFD. Crews quickly brought the fire under control. They then conducted a thorough search for any remaining embers or hotspots to ensure the fire was completely extinguished.
