Philippines - December 04, 2024 Tensions in the South China Sea escalated on Wednesday as Chinese coast guard vessels, backed by navy ships, fired powerful water cannons and sideswiped a Philippine patrol vessel near the disputed Scarborough Shoal. Philippine officials condemned the “aggressive actions” as China’s coast guard repeatedly targeted the BRP Datu Pagbuaya, damaging its navigational antennas and initiating further attacks. The confrontation unfolded as three Philippine coast guard and Bureau of Fisheries vessels conducted routine patrols to protect Filipino fishermen. According to the Philippine Coast Guard, the Chinese vessels’ maneuvers were not only reckless but unlawful under international law, escalating fears of further aggression in the contested waters. The U.S. condemned China’s actions, with Ambassador MaryKay Carlson calling them "unlawful" and "dangerous," adding that the maneuvers put lives at risk. The incident is part of ongoing territorial disputes in the region, where China’s expansive claims overlap with those of several Southeast Asian nations, including the Philippines. Despite the escalating tensions, Philippine authorities reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding their maritime interests, vowing to continue protecting their fishermen and upholding their rights in the West Philippine Sea.
