Denver, United States - December 05, 2024 Lockheed Martin has taken a unique approach to wildfire preparedness, hiring a herd of 1,200 goats to graze on dry vegetation around their campus. The goats, brought in by Goat Green, are tasked with reducing fire fuels and improving access for emergency responders in the event of a wildfire. “Faster containment is going to be safer for not only for the employees of Lockheed Martin here but really all of the neighboring communities around us as well,” said Sean Vogel, VP of safety and quality assurance at Lockheed Martin. The goats, who can even stand on their hind legs to reach tough vegetation, are working in areas too steep for machinery, significantly reducing the risk of fire spread. Firefighters with South Metro Fire Rescue (SMFR) have responded to several small fires at the Lockheed Martin campus over the years, and the company’s proactive efforts are helping make the community safer. “We’re really proud of Lockheed for taking these steps that are so important in the resiliency and fire resistance that is so badly needed,” said Selena Silva, with SMFR Community Risk Reduction.
