New York, United States - December 05, 2024 UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday called for all parties to take immediate actions to return to political process to end the bloodshed in Syria. The situation in Syria has deteriorated rapidly. By Thursday, the Syrian rebel forces, mainly Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), had seized Aleppo and Hama, two major cities, after the Syrian army announced a withdrawal from Hama and redeployment of its forces outside the city. At a press conference at the UN headquarters, Guterres said the latest offensive has put the lives of tens of thousands of civilians in Syria at risk and exacerbated the humanitarian crisis. The UN chief urged all parties in Syria to engage seriously with Geir Pedersen, UN special envoy for Syria, to find an inclusive and comprehensive approach to resolving the crisis. He also stressed that all parties are obligated under international law to protect civilians.
