Erdogan made the remarks at a press conference after a cabinet meeting in Türkiye's capital of Ankara.

SOUNDBITE (Turkish): RECEP TAYYIP ERDOGAN, Turkish President
"We are opening the Yayladagi crossing to prevent overcrowding and facilitate traffic during the return (of Syrian refugees)."

The Yayladagi crossing in southern Hatay Province lies on Syria's northwestern tip and has been closed since 2013 due to conflict in the region.

Hundreds of refugees seeking to return home to Syria also gathered at two other border crossings in southern Türkiye: the Cilvegozu border gate in Hatay and the Oncupinar border post in Kilis Province.

Türkiye is home to approximately 3.7 million Syrian refugees, according to a UN report updated on Nov. 30. This makes Türkiye the largest host of Syrians who have fled civil war.
