Nicola Fratoianni, member of the Chamber of Deputies and secretary and leader of the Italian Left and the Green Alliance and Left parties, during his speech on the occasion of the sit-in to denounce the increase in poverty in Italy and to protest against the Security Decree and the Budget Law of the Meloni Government, on the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty organized by the Even Numbers Network.
According to the 2023 Poverty Report released by the National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT), almost 5.7 million individuals, or 9.7% of the total, live in a state of poverty. There was also an increase in minors in a state of absolute poverty which in 2023 were 1.29 million, or 13.8% of the total: this is the highest value since 2014.According to the report, the incidence is higher in the regions of Southern Italy. The Even Numbers Network unites hundreds of social realities spread throughout Italy and has as its objective the fight against social inequality for a more equal society based on social and environmental justice.
