Storyline: South Korea's National Assembly on Saturday passed an impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk-yeol over his failed martial law attempt in early December. The motion, proposed for a second time by opposition lawmakers, was passed with 204 votes in favor, 85 votes against, three abstentions, and eight invalid votes, immediately suspending Yoon from exercising his presidential powers. Yoon had previously survived the first impeachment motion last Saturday due to a lack of quorum, as nearly all lawmakers from his ruling People Power Party boycotted the vote. The Constitutional Court will conclude the impeachment trial within 180 days. If the court rules the impeachment invalid, Yoon will immediately resume his presidency. However, if it upholds the impeachment request, Yoon will be ousted from office, and a presidential election will take place between April and June of 2025. The court consists of nine judges, but three positions are currently vacant after their terms expired in October. According to the court's rules, the trial of an impeachment case requires the presence of at least seven judges. However, it can proceed with six judges under the current circumstances. For the impeachment to pass, all six judges must agree; even if one person opposes, the motion will be rejected. Shotlist: Seoul, South Korea - Dec 6, 2024: 1.
