STORYLINE:

Russia's second-largest city of St. Petersburg officially kicked off New Year celebrations on Saturday evening with a festive ceremony at Palace Square.

St. Petersburg governor Alexander Beglov lit the main New Year tree alongside Alexander Belsky, Chairman of the city's Legislative Assembly. City leaders extended their best New Year wishes to visitors.

The ceremony also featured the legendary "Father Frost" and "Snow Maiden." In Russian culture, Father Frost and Snow Maiden distribute gifts and spread goodwill throughout the country during the New Year holiday. This is similar to the role of Santa Claus in Western culture.

Beglov said earlier that the main New Year tree is a fir that stands over 23 meters in height and has an age of around 90 years. It was felled in the Leningrad Oblast and transported to St. Petersburg with special equipment. The tree has been decorated in a retro style reminiscent of the 1950s and 1960s.

A festive atmosphere pervades the traditional bazaars and the well-decorated main city streets. According to the city administration, more than 300 events will take place across the city during the holiday season.
