Bargain hunters seek out juicy dinners at Smithfield Market Christmas Eve Meat Auction
A crowd of eager bargain hunters gathered at Smithfield Market this morning for the annual Christmas Eve Meat Auction in the City of London (December 24).
The surplus stock of various meats from joints of beef to gammon, is sold off at a cut price before the market shuts down for Christmas.
It was feared that the 800 year old historic market would be closed this year, though through negotiations, Smithfield will be open for at least another five.
Prospective customers waved banknotes in the air hoping to attract the attention of the market staff.
At one point staff tossed a coin and customers were asked to choose heads or tails to pick up their joint for nothing.
