Volunteers clean graves of Boxing Day Tsunami victims on 20th anniversary of disaster
Volunteers today cleaned the graves of Boxing Day Tsunami victims on the 20th anniversary of disaster.
Footage shows survivors and the relatives of victims at the cemetery dedicated to the tragedy in Phang Nga province in southern Thailand.
The cemetery had previously been used for victim identification, with 3,334 bodies successfully identified.
Of the 369 victims still buried there, 51 have been identified, including 23 Thais and 27 Burmese. However, their relatives have not yet retrieved the bodies, so the authorities have kept them in the cemetery. The other victims have never been identified.
The tsunami, which was caused by a magnitude 9.1 earthquake, killed up to 280,000 people across six countries on December 26, 2004. Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand had the highest fatalities.
The disaster displaced millions, caused widespread destruction, and led to international humanitarian efforts on an unprecedented scale.
