"179 people aboard a passenger jet that crashed while landing at an airport in southwest South Korea were confirmed dead, only two rescued, multiple media outlets said Sunday, citing the fire authorities."
It was reported at about 9:03 a.m. local time that the airplane carrying six flight attendants and 175 passengers crashed while attempting to land at the Muan International Airport some 290 km southwest of the capital of Seoul.
Jeju Air flight 7C2216 from Bangkok, Thailand, landed without wheels and skidded off the runway, hitting an outer wall. The plane caught fire with its fuselage broken in half.
Fire authorities believe the accident may have been caused by a bird strike that led to landing gear failure.
South Korean acting President Choi Sang-mok announced on Sunday a week-long mourning period over the tragedy.
