Drilling of the Tianshan Shengli Tunnel was completed on Monday morning in China's Xinjiang. At 22.13 kilometers, it is the world's longest expressway tunnel.

The critical infrastructure promises to reduce travel times across the middle section of the Tianshan Mountains from several hours to about 20 minutes.

The tunnel is a key project of the Urumqi-Yuli Expressway, which runs from the regional capital of Urumqi in northern Xinjiang to Yuli County in southern Xinjiang.

The expressway is expected to open to traffic in 2025.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): LI YALONG, Chief manager of the project section
"I've spent over 340 days a year at this construction site. Today, the tunnel has finally been drilled through, and I'm extremely thrilled and excited. I'd really love to travel through the Tianshan Mountains with my colleagues who contributed to this project."

SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): CUI HUAXIN, Vice chief engineer of the project section
"I'm very happy to witness the breakthrough of the Tianshan Shengli Tunnel. The moment it broke through was incredibly exciting. I've spent four years deep in the Tianshan Mountains, and I think all the effort and hardship were all worth it."
