Auri and Dain Bukauskas are Maine natives with a proud Lithuanian heritage who share a love of wild ice skating and a passion for showcasing the natural beauty of our state. They caused quite a stir recently when they were spotted skating on Moosehead on seemingly “thin ice.” The Moosehead Lakeshore Journal tracked Auri down and he was kind enough to share this breathtaking video and statement with us: "Dain and I are part of a growing 'wild ice skating' community in Maine. When the conditions are right, Moosehead is one of the most exciting 'big ice' destinations in Maine. We'd love our post to raise awareness about this growing sport in Maine, which could bring tourism revenue to rural Maine communities in winter, even (and sometimes especially!) when skiing conditions aren't great. The community right now is centered around a vibrant Facebook group, the 'Maine and NH Skating and Ice Report' We'd love for Moosehead locals to join. The group has safety info and gear recommendations to help folks get started with wild ice skating.”
