Tibet earthquake: Rescue teams pull out injured residents from collapsed buildings
At 9:05 am on January 7, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Dingri County in Shigatse City, Tibet, with a focal depth of 10 kilometres. Preliminary assessments as of 3:00 pm on January 7 indicate that the earthquake has resulted in 95 fatalities and 130 injuries.
Dingri County, located in the southwestern border of the country, lies on the northern slopes of the central section of the Himalayas, near the base of Mount Everest, the world's highest peak. The epicentre, with an average altitude of approximately 4,259 meters within a 5-kilometre radius, features rugged terrain, making rescue operations challenging.
According to official data, Dingri County has a population of over 60,000, with approximately 6,900 people within a 20-kilometre radius of the epicentre. Preliminary investigations reveal that over 1,000 houses have suffered varying degrees of damage, with some reduced to rubble.
The Tibet Fire and Rescue Corps has activated the *Inter-Regional Earthquake Rescue Response Plan*, deploying five lightweight earthquake rescue teams from Chamdo, Nyingchi, Shannan, Nagqu, and Ngari. By 11:40 AM, over 1,500 local firefighters and rescue personnel had been dispatched to the disaster area.
Rescue teams are working tirelessly to save those trapped under debris. By 3:30 PM, they had rescued 21 trapped individuals and safely relocated more than 600 affected residents.
