Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim said he felt “from the first minute” that his team would knock Arsenal out of the FA Cup on Sunday, despite playing the third-round tie with ten men for over an hour before prevailing 5-3 on penalties.

Defending champions United were left at a numerical disadvantage after Diogo Dalot was shown a second yellow card, having mistimed a tackle on Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino on 61 minutes.

Under-fire Joshua Zirkzee scored the winning penalty after Kai Havertz’s spot kick was saved, following a match where the German forward missed several chances to seal victory.

Havertz's effort in the shoot-out was stopped by United's second-choice goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, who had also blocked a second-half spot kick from Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard after Havertz was fouled in the box by Harry Maguire.

The result saw record 14-time FA Cup winners Arsenal exit the competition in the third round for a third time in four seasons, while Manchester United advanced to a fourth-round home tie with Leicester City.
