During a recent monitoring, the staff spotted nearly 120 Baer's pochards in the Hengshui Lake National Nature Reserve in north China.
Baer's pochard is a critically endangered species under first-class national protection and listed in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species.
The Baer's pochard population observed at Hengshui Lake is the largest recorded since 2018.
The species is seen as an environmental indicator, and its presence suggests the ecological improvement in the nature reserve.
