STORYLINE:
The Changbai Mountain National Nature Reserve in northeast China has recorded footage of a wild Siberian tiger, the Jilin Provincial Forestry and Grassland Bureau said Tuesday.
This discovery is evidence of the species' ongoing habitat expansion and proof of its return after three decades to the hinterland of Changbai Mountain.
Following the discovery of a set of tracks a week earlier, staff at the reserve immediately deployed nine monitoring cameras to the area. On Tuesday, footage of the tiger was captured near the west slope of Changbai Mountain.
Local authorities took swift action, issuing early warnings and installing signs to alert the public to the tiger's presence.
Over the years, Jilin Province has continuously strengthened its ecological protection efforts by implementing measures such as mountain closures, hunting bans and the cessation of commercial logging in natural forests.
Changbai Mountain is one of the country's most pristine natural ecosystems, featuring rich biodiversity and varied climate zones. Established in 1960, the Changbai Mountain National Nature Reserve is now home to 1,586 wild animal species.
Also known as the Amur tiger, the Siberian tiger is one of the world's most endangered species. About 500 Siberian tigers are believed to be living in the wild, mainly in northeast China and the far east of Russia.
