Tokyo, Japan - January 12, 2025 On Sunday, dozens of men and women braved the freezing temperatures at Tokyo's Teppozu Inari shrine, taking part in a traditional ice-water bathing ceremony to welcome the new year. Participants, dressed in loincloths or light clothing, immersed themselves in ice water to purify their souls and pray for good health in 2025. The ceremony, a centuries-old Japanese tradition, is believed to bring physical stamina, mental strength and spiritual renewal. About 80 people participated this year, following Shinto rituals intended to cleanse past misfortunes and invite good fortune. This winter tradition continues to attract attention for its symbolic significance and is an annual event at shrines throughout Japan, where many seek blessings of health and prosperity for the coming year.
