STORYLINE:
The coastal city of Port Sudan, now the largest host for people fleeing the ongoing conflict in Sudan, has become a hub for displaced families seeking refuge.
Overcrowding at the shelter remains a critical issue, with multiple families often sharing a single tent.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic): ASMAA MOHAMED AL-NAEEM, Displaced Sudanese
"I traveled to Atbara and then came here. At first, I used to sit under a Rakuba (a straw tent) outside the camp. Now I live in a Rakuba. I have a child with asthma who uses an inhaler, and another child, aged 14, who has diabetes and requires insulin."
SOUNDBITE 2 (Arabic): EHSAN MOHAMED, Displaced Sudanese
"I have four children. This is my youngest son. He is six months old. Due to a lack of adequate nutrition, he suffers from malnutrition. Another family shares the tent with us. The mother has five children, including young ones."
SOUNDBITE 3 (Arabic): TARIQ MERGHANI, Displaced Sudanese
"There is no proper environmental sanitation in the camp. People dispose of garbage haphazardly, which poses a threat to the environment, not just inside the camp, but also in the surrounding areas."
SOUNDBITE 4 (Arabic): ISLAM MOHAMED, Supervisor at a displaced shelter in Port Sudan
"I have become a supervisor in the camp, where we distribute what we receive from generous donors to those in need. If the contributions are limited, we prioritize distributing them to those most in need. For example, we receive used clothes and distribute them to the people. We also receive other types of aid, which we distribute to those affected."
Sudan has been gripped by a devastating conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces since mid-April 2023, which claimed at least 29,683 lives and displaced about 15 million people, either inside or outside Sudan, according to the latest estimates by international organizations.
