Cúcuta, Colombia - January 17, 2025 The Catatumbo region, in the northeast of Colombia and bordering Venezuela, has lived for decades between armed conflict and state neglect, but that does not mean it has become accustomed to the violence that erupted again this week between the National Liberation Army (ELN) guerrillas and dissidents from the FARC, with clashes leaving more than 30 dead. STATEMENTS BY WILLIAMS VILLAMIZAR, GOVERNOR OF THE DEPARTMENT OF NORTE DE SANTANDER: These days, specifically yesterday, a confrontation between the ELN and the FARC began and this has generated death, desolation and displacement. At the moment we have figures of more than 30 dead, more than 20 wounded in a single day. And we also have confined populations that are waiting for the possibility of a humanitarian corridor to be able to leave and move to Ocaña or Cúcuta. This requires a whole series of immediate actions, which we will be coordinating with the national government in order to preserve the lives of the inhabitants and to be able to give attention in housing, lodging, food, education, health, to each one of these victims who are going to be displaced, a very complex situation we are living in the north of Santander.
