STORYLINE:
The World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting 2025 kicks off on Monday in Davos, Switzerland, under the theme "Collaboration for the Intelligent Age."
Gathering nearly 3,000 leaders from around the world, the meeting is expected to address pressing challenges and explore opportunities, such as those presented by AI.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): BORGE BRENDE, World Economic Forum President
"So AI is already reshaping the global growth. We are already seeing that it is reshaping trade. We see the growth is in digital trade and services. If you apply AI in a good way, it can increase productivity with 10 percent in the coming decade. That means a lot of prosperity for those that are able to implement it in a strategic way."
SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): LIANG GUOYONG, Senior economist with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development
"AI-driven automation is set to profoundly impact transportation, industrial manufacturing, and service sectors. Thus, AI is poised to become a significant technological force in the coming years, influencing and driving global economic growth and reshaping the economic landscape."
This year's meeting focuses on five key areas: reimagining growth, industries in the intelligent age, investing in people, safeguarding the planet, and rebuilding trust.
In light of shared challenges, World Economic Forum (WEF) President Borge Brende called on the international community to collaborate and find solutions.
SOUNDBITE 3 (English): BORGE BRENDE, World Economic Forum President
"I think it is important that we work together and have a dialogue. I agree in this notion that we are all in the same boat. Global problems, you have to find global solutions. So I think it's very important that even in the world where there's more competition, we will need to work together, sit around the same table, and discuss, have a dialogue and find solutions."
Brende also highlighted China's active role in fostering cooperation and supporting growth.
SOUNDBITE 4 (English): BORGE BRENDE, World Economic Forum President
"We do know that China, as the second largest economy in the world, and also with a lot of resources, are collaborating very much with other emerging economies, but also with (other) developing countries. And capacity building is important there. We know that China is also a key investor in many of the (other) developing countries, but also other emerging economies. And I believe that that can contribute also to growth."
