Philippines - January 29, 2025 A tense maritime encounter unfolded west of Zambales as the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) challenged a China Coast Guard (CCG) vessel patrolling within the country’s exclusive economic zone. On January 29, the BRP Teresa Magbanua (MRRV-9701) issued repeated radio warnings to CCG Vessel 3304, demanding its immediate departure. In a firm transmission, the PCG cited the Philippine Maritime Zones Act, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and the 2016 Arbitral Award, asserting the area as Philippine waters. "You do not possess any legal authority to patrol within the Philippine exclusive economic zone," the PCG declared, warning that the vessel’s presence would be reported to higher authorities. The standoff underscores ongoing maritime tensions in the region.
