Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta hopes Sunday’s 5-1 thrashing of Manchester City will give his team renewed momentum when 'The Gunners' try to turn around a 2-0 deficit at Newcastle United in Wednesday’s EFL Cup semi-final second leg.

Newcastle's win at the Emirates Stadium four weeks ago put Eddie Howe’s team in a commanding position to reach the final at Wembley Stadium, where 'The Magpies' would be looking to clinch their first domestic silverware since 1955.

Arsenal have only won England’s second-tier cup competition twice in their history, in 1987 and 1993.

Speaking the day after the winter transfer window closed, Arteta admitted he was disappointed that Arsenal did not sign a new striker following Gabriel Jesus' season-ending injury in last month's FA Cup defeat to Manchester United.

After they fell short in a bid to sign Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa - a move it is understood appears unlikely even in the summer - Arsenal will continue their quest for silverware this season with Kai Havertz as their sole recognised senior striker.
