STORYLINE:
Enagas, a leading natural gas transmission company in Spain, said in its latest bulletin on Tuesday that the United States overtook Algeria last month as the largest exporter of natural gas to Spain.
The bulletin shows that Spain imported 10,454 gigawatt hours (GWh) of liquified natural gas (LNG) from the U.S. in January 2025. Supplying Spain with 29.3 percent of its natural gas imports, the U.S. has become Spain's main provider of natural gas for the first time since November 2023.
LNG gas imports from the U.S. rose sharply after the start of the conflict in Ukraine, when Spain attempted to reduce imports of Russian gas. However, Enagas reported that Russian exports to Spain reached 72,690 GWh in 2023, up 35 percent from 2022.
Algeria supplied Spain with 10,119 GWh of LNG in January via the Medgaz pipeline, which reaches Spain from North Africa. This constitutes 28.4 percent of total Spanish gas imports in January.
Russia supplied gas equivalent to 6,464 GWh in January, accounting for 18.1 percent of Spain's total gas imports. Nigeria ranked as the fourth-largest supplier.
