Russia marked Defender of the Fatherland Day with fireworks.

Footage shows colourful pyrotechnics igniting in the night sky as locals celebrated the holiday in St Petersburg on February 23.

Various events were held, including parades, concerts, and wreath-laying ceremonies at war memorials.

The holiday honours those who serve in the military and other security forces, ensuring the security of their homeland. It has its roots in the establishment of the Red Army in 1918 and has evolved over the years into a day of national pride and military recognition.

During the Great Patriotic War, or World War II, the Red Army suffered significant casualties, with millions of soldiers losing their lives in the fight against Nazi Germany. The day honours their memory and the contributions of all military personnel to the defence of the nation.
