A villager was rescued from a crocodile that attacked him in a town in the Philippines that has become notorious for reptile attacks.

Tajuid Karain, 50, was planting seaweed near his seaside stilt home when a large crocodile glided toward him in Panglima Sugala town in Tawi-Tawi province, on February 25.

The beast, obscured by the murky waters, sank its fangs into his thigh before attempting to drag him away into the sea.

However, Tajuid was able to scream for help. His arms were also bitten as he tried desperately to prise the croc's jaws apart.

Other villagers then plunged into the water and yanked him away from the marine predator.

Footage shows the man lying on a bench nursing gruesome wounds the crocodile had inflicted. It had left deep bites on his right leg and tore off a chunk of flesh from his right arm.

The resident was rushed to a nearby hospital and is now recovering from his injuries.

A villager named Rani Mundok said: 'He went to the water to plant agar agar seaweed. That's where he was attacked by the crocodile.'

The area is a known habitat of saltwater crocodiles.

Earlier this month, another villager, Sariul Sarakal, 27, was attacked by a crocodile as he was walking on a wooden bridge near his stilt home in the same town.

He survived by elbowing the beast in the face before it could rip him apart with its 'death roll'. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he received stitches for his wounds.

Local officials said they were aware of the crocodile threat.

Disaster response officer Sarima Atara previously said: 'We have already discussed this issue in a council meeting. Crocodiles are one of the threats among the residents, especially in infested areas. For our preventive measures, the disaster official-in-charge and the village head constantly remind the locals to be careful.'
