The Australian government has revealed a plan to extend the mobile network to cover almost all of the country.
Minister for Communications Michelle Rowland on Tuesday announced that the government will update the existing universal service obligation (USO) to include mobile phone services.
The USO currently ensures that all Australians have access to broadband internet, landline telephone, and payphone telephone services.
Rowland said that the Universal Outdoor Mobile Obligation (UOMO) will require mobile phone network operators to ensure access to voice and SMS services "almost everywhere across Australia."
She said that an additional 5 million square km of land -- including 37,000 km of roads in regional areas -- would receive mobile coverage by 2027 under the plan.
