Last month Thailand cut electricity, petrol and internet to five areas of Myanmar on its borders which are operating illegal call centres scamming people in the region, notably China.
According to government minister Prasert Chantaruangthong, scam reports have reduced by up to 50% in the country but still amount to 50 million Baht daily (over GBP one million).
Tachileik in northern Thailand bordering Mae Sai in Chiangrai province has residents crossing to purchase essential supplies, while scammers are believed to be obtaining electricity from Laos.
This week six chartered aircraft will transport 456 Chinese who have been working in Myanmar call centres. As of March 5, 8700 scam workers, mostly Chinese, await repatriation from Myawaddy in Myanmar.(source: The Irrawaddy).
