A Chinese tourist went missing after being swept away by waves in Indonesia.

Hu Xisong, 69, was reportedly dragged out to sea by strong currents while paddling off Nyang-Nyang Beach in Bali, on March 16.

Onlookers said the swirling waters carried the holidaymaker eastward.

I Nyoman Sidakarya, head of the local search and rescue office, said: 'We received information at 9:20 am about one foreigner being swept away by the current at Nyang-Nyang Beach, and immediately dispatched eight personnel to the location.'

The rescue team were divided into a land search and rescue unit (SRU) that scoured the rugged coastline, and a sea unit that trawled the waters on a jet ski and a boat.

Field co-ordinator Gede Surya H. added: 'The land SRU is searching from Nyang-Nyang Beach towards the east, while the lifeguards' jetski is covering Muaya Beach to Nyang-Nyang Beach. The rescue team's rubber boat was assigned to search from Pandawa Beach to Nyang-Nyang Beach.'

A thermal drone was also deployed, but no signs of the Chinese national were found.
