Talavera de la Reina, Spain - March 23, 2025 A powerful flood from the Tajo River caused the partial collapse of a historic Roman bridge in Talavera de la Reina, a town in the province of Toledo, central Spain. The incident happened on Saturday night (22), damaging the bridge’s support structure. No injuries were reported. The bridge, built in the late 15th century, rests on the foundations of an older Roman structure. Heavy rainfall led to the river overflowing, overwhelming the ancient architecture. On Sunday (23), ten of Spain’s 19 regions were under orange and yellow alerts due to the risk of intense rain. The last restoration of the bridge took place in 2002, according to the Talavera de la Reina City Council. Video footage of the destruction has circulated widely, showing the dramatic impact of the flooding on this centuries-old landmark.
