United States - March 28, 2025 Three major wildfires are burning through western North Carolina as of March 28, 2025. The Black Cove, Deep Woods, and Fish Hook fires stretch across seven miles of rugged mountains in Polk County. The Gastonia Fire Department is assisting with efforts to combat two large wildland fires exceeding 5,000 acres. Video footage shows crews battling flames in tough terrain near Green River Gorge, Holbert Cove, and Lake Adger. Dry conditions and high winds are fueling the fires. The region, already hit by Hurricane Helene, faces elevated fire risks. Some areas in nearby Henderson County have seen voluntary evacuations. The Black Cove Fire, only 17% contained, has scorched over 3,288 acres. The Deep Woods Fire, at 30% containment, has burned 3,373 acres. The Fish Hook Fire, nearing control at 86% containment, has consumed 199 acres. Firefighters are working hard to stop the spread. The mountainous landscape and windy weather make containment a challenge.
