This is the shocking moment a man was spotted openly smoking from a "crack pipe" - in a packed Tube carriage."

A commuter said he was "in complete disbelief" when he discovered the apparent drug use on a busy Northern line train between Stockwell and London Bridge. "

The alarming video shows the man, who is wearing a green beanie and is sat in the priority seat of the train, smoking from a pipe.

Commuters around him can be seen looking on in confusion while one passenger says a strong chemical smell filled the carriage.

Alex Yates, who filmed the disturbing footage, said: "It was a busy Tube and I saw a big gap between this man and the other passengers and was unsure why. "

"I then smelled a very strong chemical smell - when I looked up I was in complete disbelief that this man had pulled out a crack pipe and began smoking it. "

"What I found most fascinating was everyone's incredibly British response of simply pretending that the issue didn't exist. "

"There wasn't a single reaction aside from a few funny exchanged looks." "

The footage - shot in December 2023 - is one of several which have surfaced in recent days showing passengers smoking various drugs on public transport.

It was reported earlier this week there is an "epidemic", with commuters claiming they smell cannabis at least twice a week on the Elizabeth, Circle and District Line. "

TfL said in a statement given to MailOnline, regarding one video: "We want all customers to feel safe when travelling and we understand the alarm this kind of behaviour could cause. "

"We are working with the police, specialist teams and other agencies to help move vulnerable people away from our network and into help and support."

And responding to another incident, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander told LBC on Monday: "That situation that you described of somebody smoking crack cocaine on the London Underground is obviously totally unacceptable and I know it will concern the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan and the TfL Commissioner Andy Lord as much as it would concern me."

"The overall point to make here is that the transport network in London and across the country as a whole is a relatively low crime environment."

"Clearly any increase in the number of incidents that are happening, whether it's on the Tube, buses, on the trams in London, the British Transport police, alongside the enforcement officers that work on the Tube will want to tackle that."
