A powerful candlelight vigil, known locally as a velatón, was held in Bogotá, Colombia, on April 9, 2025, to honor the life of Sara Millerey González, a trans woman brutally murdered in Bello, Antioquia.

The moving footage, filmed and shared by Omar Vásquez on X, captures the scale and emotion of the gathering, where hundreds stood in solidarity to mourn Sara and demand justice for victims of anti-LGBTQ+ violence.

Sara’s death sent shockwaves through the country. She was reportedly beaten, her limbs broken, and her body discarded in a river—a chilling and targeted act that Colombia’s president condemned as “fascism.” In response, the mayor of Bello announced a 50 million peso (approximately $11,000) reward for information leading to the attackers.

According to advocacy group Caribe Afirmativo, Sara is one of 13 LGBTQ+ individuals murdered in Antioquia this year alone, underscoring the deep-rooted transfobia and urgent need for systemic change in Colombia.
