The great bee migration: Capturing a swarm in southwest Louisiana

Buy video

One of my bee hives became overcrowded which is a natural occurrence in early spring. The honeybees will then make a queen cell. When the new queen emerges the old queen will then leave the hive taking at least half of the colony with her to build and new hive. In the video you see what happens next. The queen landed in a nearby tree to rest and the other bees began to form a cluster around her to keep her protected. While they’re in the cluster the scout bees will begin going out to look for a suitable place to build their new hive. They were way too high to capture so we waited 2 days before they finally moved to a lower tree and we were able to capture them. It’s always best practice to try and capture the bees and place them in a hive box rather than them possibly moving into someone’s home or another inconvenient spot. This event was in our backyard in southwest Louisiana
