A rare 1993 Nirvana t-shirt has sold for a staggering 36,000 USD in Thailand.

Vintage clothing collector Ponrat Naraintarat said the black Brockum top emblazoned with the grunge band's 'In Utero' artwork was one of the finest examples in the world.

Similar tops can sell for several thousand dollars on eBay, but finding the item in black and mint condition is particularly rare. Brockum was the most well-known official manufacturer of the band's t-shirts.

Wheeler-dealer Ponrat, 30, has now offloaded the item to a die-hard Kurt Cobain fan for an eye-watering 1.2 million Baht (36,000 USD) in Bangkok.

Ponrat, who runs the Tokvintage store in Surat Thani province, said the shirt was a valuable collector's item for fans of the American rock band.

He said: 'This is an In Utero shirt in black, in pristine condition, with brown embroidery and font and a Brockum tag. In my experience with Nirvana t-shirts, this is the best condition example I have ever seen. It is the best condition t-shirt of its kind in Thailand.

‘The size is 24 inches across the chest and 30 inches in length, very new. Many people guessed the price of the previous one, but it was not in as perfect condition as this. They guessed 900,000 Baht, one million, 1.2 million, 800,000, 700,000, or even 300 Baht.

‘But this one is completely new, and I think there are not many like it in Thailand.

‘If there were a shirt condition contest, I would enter this one because it is truly mint condition. This is why the price is high.'

Ponrat sells his wares through his Facebook page and live streams, which have become one of the most powerful methods of retailing to emerge in recent years.

Despite the steep price tag, Ponrat said a customer from Bangkok snapped up the shirt just hours after it went on sale. The buyer reportedly agreed to pay for it in instalments.

Nirvana was an American rock band formed in 1987, known for popularising grunge music in the 1990s. They were catapulted to global fame with their hit song 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'.

In Utero was released in September 1993 to critical acclaim - the final record before singer Kurt Cobain shot himself in 1994.

Drummer Dave Grohl went on to form the Foo Fighters. The drummer, a vocal critic of President Trump, recently fathered a daughter outside his 21-year marriage to Jordyn Blum, with whom he has three older daughters.
