Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin was seen visiting the body and praying at his side. A video released by the Vatican on Tuesday showed the Pope’s open casket, laid in a church as mourning rites continued. The wooden coffin, decorated with red cloth, was surrounded by clergy and nuns who sang prayers in remembrance. The Vatican has announced that the Pope's funeral is expected to take place between Friday, April 25, and Sunday, April 27. In a departure from tradition, Pope Francis confirmed in his final testament, released on Monday, April 21, that he wished to be buried in the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome, rather than in St. Peter’s Basilica. The Vatican stated that the Pope’s body could be moved to St. Peter’s Basilica as early as Wednesday morning, April 26, to allow the faithful to pay their respects.
