China: China puts digital future on display at int'l expo with AI-powered innovations
The 2025 China International Digital Economy Expo, held from Friday to Sunday in Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province, showcased a range of AI-powered innovations, including unmanned stores and smart classrooms. Visitors at the event saw firsthand how digital technologies are transforming industries, while global experts used the platform to discuss inclusive and sustainable digital growth. One of the highlights at the expo was an AI-powered retail store that operates without staff. Customers scan a QR code to enter, make purchases independently, and access remote support via in-store cameras when needed. The technology behind such stores costs less than 10,000 yuan (about 1,400 U.S. dollars), and there are currently around 30,000 of them across China. An AI-powered homework grading machine also captivated visitors. It automatically evaluates student assignments across various subjects, identifying correct and incorrect answers, writing comments, and assigning scores. Another standout innovation was the use of smart interactive screens in classrooms. These displays enhance students' learning experiences by making lessons more intuitive, engaging, and interactive. International guests have also shown keen interest in the digital economy. The expo also showcased a wide range of digital and robotic technology applications across sectors such as transportation, healthcare, and industrial production. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Exhibitor (name not given): "When we need to create a 3D geometric figure, our teachers can input a rough sketch into the platform, and it will automatically convert it into a precise standard figure. Furthermore, teachers can tailor the content according to their instructional objectives. For instance, we can perform fill operations here and generate different types of developments, such as unfolding the 3D shape into various net representations. The dynamic display helps students develop the ability to integrate numerical and spatial thinking during class. The shape can then be folded back."; 6. Exhibitor writing formula on smart blackboard; 7. SOUNDBITE (English) Teddy Guh, industrial liaison consultant, Association of Ghana Industries: "We've met a cable manufacturer and a construction manufacturing company that we want to introduce to our partners in Ghana."; 8. Exhibitors, visitors at expo; 9. SOUNDBITE (Vietnamese, dubbed in English) Tri Dao, chairman of board, Octopos Network (ending with shots 10-11): "This Expo has provided me with a valuable opportunity for in-depth exchanges with global partners and has given me a clearer understanding of policy directions and industry trends. I firmly believe we are at a critical historical juncture -- by leveraging cross-sector collaboration, shared wisdom, and coordinated actions, we can not only foster regional prosperity but also contribute concrete strength to building a community with a shared future for humanity."; 10.
