Naval athletes from nine countries began four days of high-stakes competition on Sunday as the 54th CISM World Military Naval Pentathlon Championship opened in central China's Wuhan, testing combat skills across five demanding events. The four-day program will see teams from nine nations -- China, South Africa, Brazil, Cambodia, Spain, Iran, Italy, Pakistan and Russia -- battle through obstacle crossing, life-saving swimming, utility swimming, seamanship and amphibious cross-country. Observers from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Myanmar are also in attendance. The naval pentathlon is one of the flagship events on the CISM calendar, a unique blend of strength, skill and service-specific tasks. The current competition standards replicate real operational scenarios such as amphibious landings, shipboard operations and open-sea rescue, putting core naval proficiencies to the test.
