The body of Pope Francis was transferred to St. Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday, where it will lie in state for three days before his funeral on Saturday, April 26.

The late pontiff, who passed away on Easter Monday at the age of 88, will be honoured by world leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, at the funeral service. Pope Francis’ coffin was placed at the Altar of the Confessio, a sacred site above the tomb of St. Peter, the first pope.

Cardinals paid their respects in pairs during a brief prayer service, and the public will be allowed to visit from 11 am local time.
