SHOTLIST: BRUSSELS, BELGIUM (APRIL 28, 2025) (ANADOLU - ACCESS ALL) 1. VARIOUS OF AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL SECRETARY-GENERAL AGNES CALLAMARD SPEAKING TO ANADOLU REPORTER (English)BRUSSELS, BELGIUM - APRIL 28, 2025: Amnesty International Secretary-General Agnes Callamard has urged the international community, particularly the European Union, to take immediate action to end Israel's blockade of Gaza and ensure accountability for war crimes and genocide. In an interview with Anadolu, Callamard criticized Israel for violating a cease-fire agreement weeks ago, saying: "Since then, hundreds of Palestinians have been killed. The United Nations reports that women and children make up the vast majority. We are aware that people are running out of food, water, and medicine." The World Food Program (WFP), the World Health Organization (WHO), all of those UN agencies, and humanitarian agencies are raising the alarm, she said, adding: "There is no more food in Gaza. There is no more food in Gaza. So the situation is absolutely terrible." Callamard also criticized the United States and many European governments for enabling the crisis through their failure to uphold international law and protect Palestinian rights. For the last 18 months, "we have seen a genocide unfold in front of our very eyes," and that genocide has been made possible by the United States and too many European governments' failure to uphold international law and Palestinian rights. -No red carpet for war criminals Callamard urged the EU to uphold its founding principles of human rights, international law, and peace. In response to reports that some EU countries may allow Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to visit, she said: "Nobody should be protecting that government from international scrutiny. Nobody should suggest that war criminals be welcomed openly and on a red carpet." She urged the EU to ensure that arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court are carried out and called for action against Hungary for violating ICC statutes and EU legal standards. Callamard also expressed concern over growing restrictions on freedom of expression across Europe, citing Germany as a worrying example. "It's one thing for Germany not to name what's happening in Gaza as genocide or crimes against humanity, but it is another thing to use the law to curtail freedom of expression, legitimate expression from people wanting to express solidarity for Palestinians." She called on all international actors to recognize Israel's actions as genocide and hold it accountable. Amnesty International has called for an end to the blockade. We are calling for food, water, and medicine to be allowed into Gaza in sufficient quantities, not in small amounts, she said, adding: "People are starving. People are dying. That includes women and children, who have been dying and being victimized for 18 months."
