Around 1 p.m. on April 30, an explosion occurred in the Fengjing Jiayuan residential compound in Beiying Subdistrict, Xiaodian District, Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province. The blast triggered a massive fire and thick billowing smoke. The shockwave shattered nearby windows and caused balconies on some buildings to collapse. The explosion was so loud and forceful that some residents thought an earthquake had occurred.

Video footage from the scene shows several cars parked in the compound catching fire due to the explosion. The vehicles were eventually reduced to charred frames after thick black smoke engulfed them.

As of 3 p.m., the fire had been extinguished.

According to Taiyuan city officials, the explosion injured 17 people, including four seriously. Three people have been treated and discharged. Fire and rescue personnel are conducting a door-to-door search in the affected building, and rescue efforts are ongoing.

The cause of the explosion is still under investigation.
