Rain-Wrapped Tornado Passes Just 0.2 Miles from Storm Chaser's Truck, Gusts Hit 102 mph
Script:
A dramatic encounter with a rain-wrapped tornado was captured by meteorologist Jock Williams on April 29, 2025. Filming from his truck, Williams documented the tornado passing just 0.2 miles to his north, while his anemometer registered a powerful 102 mph wind gust — evidence of an intense rear inflow jet.
The footage shows a foggy and turbulent scene, with cows visible in the background, underscoring the storm’s proximity and destructive potential. Such conditions recall the 2017 Elgin tornado, where livestock were tossed hundreds of yards by tornadic winds.
Rear inflow jets, known to intensify storm downdrafts, are often driven by sharp pressure gradients and line-end vortices within mesoscale convective systems — aligning with the severe conditions Williams encountered.
